Who we are

Engineers Without Borders is a non-profit humanitarian organization of dedicated and enthusiastic students and professionals who believe everyone should have access to adequate sanitation, safe drinking water, and resources to meet their basic needs. Engineers Without Borders at the University of Delaware is part of this national organization and is committed to designing and implementing sustainable solutions to problems in international developing communities and bridging cultural, economic, and political divides.

Why the Philippines?

One of EWB-UD's current projects is working with the community of Ubujan, located on the island of Bohol, Philippines. Ubujan has a population of approximately 1,200 people. Although population density varies among the community, all members of the population share the lack of access to a safe drinking water source. Though the community has over 10 major water sources, we have found that they are all undrinkable due to high salt content and dangerous levels of the bacterium fecal coliform. Destructive natural disasters and the geological base of the island have both contributed to this problem. The significant number of large storms leaves properties damaged and public water sources flooded with salt water, while the limestone karst landscape allows for easy contamination of the region's natural water sources.

During the summer of 2015 and the winter of 2016, members of EWB-UD visited Ubujan on initial assessment trips to gauge the needs and priorities of the community. Through a strong connection with Concepcion Muneses (a grandmother of one of our project managers) who resides in Ubujan for half of every year, EWB-UD hopes to continue building a strong long-term partnership with the community. This relationship helped EWB-UD develop a good understanding of the community's needs prior to our trips. Carrying out two separate assessment trips during different seasons allowed EWB-UD to best understand Ubujan's existing water sources and underlying issues, as well as to carefully determine the optimum solution for the community. With the information gathered from these two assessment trips, EWB-UD is planning on transitioning into the implementation phase of this project.

Our goal

Through research and analysis of Ubujan's specific needs and vulnerabilities, EWB-UD has decided to focus their efforts on designing a water decontamination and distribution system. Throughout the next few months the members of the Philippines project will be designing this system with the goal of implementing in January of 2017. To meet the needs of the community, EWB-UD is working with various professional engineers to design and implement a sustainable solution for Ubujan. Although the decontamination and distribution system is EWB-UD's primary solution, the project members will continue to examine all possible solutions to resolve this community's devastating issue.

EWB-UD is also currently designing a community education program with the support of the local health worker in Ubujan. This program will focus on sanitation practices and safe water storage and handling to encourage practices that reduce water-borne illnesses. EWB-UD is committed to improving the well-being of the residents of Ubujan through the combination of implementation and education, sustained by our important community partnership.

How you can help

Throughout the upcoming months we will need significant funding to help make this implementation trip a success. Funds need to be directed toward the costs of travel for UD students, mentors and professional engineering advisors as well as materials for the decontamination and distribution system and in-country labor.

In order to be able to travel and implement a water decontamination and distribution system we need significant funding. Any amount donated will make a difference!
