Support the Early Learning Center in honor of Peggy Bradley's retirement

Early Learning Center

For the past 42 years it has been my pleasure to work in the field of education in a variety of capacities. The last 10 of those years I have had the privilege of working side-by-side with hundreds of children, families, UD students and professional colleagues at the University of Delaware Early Learning Center. The ELC is a nationally accredited center which provides high quality early education and care for 300 children from birth through 3rd grade and their families in addition to serving as a clinical placement and research site for hundreds of University undergraduate and graduate students each year.

As I count off the last days towards my retirement date of June 30, 2017, I invite you to join me in making a gift to enrich the outdoor environments at the ELC.

Research indicates that children who have opportunities to play in rich, varied and spacious nature-based outdoor environments:
  • demonstrate greater capacity for focused attention and concentration,
  • engage in more creative forms of play and play more cooperatively,
  • experience gains in science, language arts and math,
  • grow in motor fitness, balance and coordination,
  • increased opportunities for healthy social relationships and
  • cultivate a sense of peace, self-control and resiliency

In the past several years, the ELC has expanded programming to the outdoor areas. Toddlers through kindergarteners are gardening with assistance from the UD Master Gardeners. Our older children are official stewards of nearby portions of the James T. Hall Nature Trail. Teachers are developing outdoor curriculum and teaching strategies including "rough and tumble play", nature and spirituality, mindfulness in nature and the creation of an outdoor classroom.

There is more that we would like to do. With your support, we hope to create intentionally designed shared outdoor learning environments that draw on recent research on the impact of rich outdoor experiences in natural environments on children's development, learning and well-being.

Our focus in the coming years is to become a UD Spire of Excellence connecting children and adults to the natural world. The impact of this work will be far-reaching.

  • UD students in clinical experiences on the Children's Campus will learn to value and incorporate nature in the work they do with children and families.
  • The Children's Campus will serve as a model of excellence locally and nationally, calling attention to the role the natural world can and should play in the lives of children.
  • UD faculty and students across campus will have a site for research and development of nature-based curriculum and teaching for dissemination nationally.
  • Families and children have beautiful outdoor spaces to engage with each other.

With your support, the ELC will be able to continue to grow and be a leader in educating our youngest future citizens.

Thank you for your support.
