Original Project Details Below:

Here at the University of Delaware, a team is rising through the rankings toward the top of their class. The Club Sailing team, with over 60 members, competitively races in regattas up and down the East Coast. In the past year, the team has jumped up 14 spots to be ranked 21st of 53 schools in the MAISA Conference.

Some of this success can be attributed to the superior facilities provided by the North East River Yacht Club (NERYC). Since our move to North East, Maryland in 2012, all members have enjoyed learning how to sail, competing, and forming lifelong friendships with fellow Blue Hens!

Our rising success did not go unnoticed and two wonderful members of the NERYC wanted to help the team. David and Hannelore Hamme of Philadelphia, PA donated their 33-foot racing sailboat, Fireworks, to the team. Our faculty adviser and NERYC member, Dr. Steven Stanhope, Associate Deputy Provost for Research and Scholarship, played an integral part in assisting the team with the donation from the Hammes. We hope that this new opportunity will provide us with further sailing experience and allow us to compete in larger races throughout the Chesapeake Bay.

As many know, especially those in the sailing community, maintaining a sailboat is an incredible undertaking. It requires a significant amount of time, money and energy.

While the boat is currently being stored indoors at the Georgetown Yacht Basin in Georgetown, Maryland, the team hopes to continue to dock Fireworks in North East, Maryland at the NERYC. While the team has procured funds to maintain most aspects of the boat, we are asking for additional help.

Your gift to our team will cover the dockage fees in North East and allow us to access Fireworks on a regular basis for practice and racing.

Please consider a gift today. Thank you!
