Help Us with Our Geo-Wall!
ASCE - Geo-Wall (2017)
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) at the University of Delaware strives to assist members in making career decisions via speaker events, activities, inter-school competitions and presentations. Members actively research various disciplines within civil engineering. Our chapter's goal is to educate members about new engineering technologies and advancement, as well as promote ethical practices.
ASCE competes regionally and nationally each year with 3 competition teams. One of those competition teams is the Geo-Wall team. The team designs and builds a reinforcement wall out of paper which holds back sand that is compacted in a 3'x3'x3' box. Donations would go to research and materials to be used during the design/build phase.
The Geo-Wall competition is a student competition, sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE, to build a model mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall that must stand up to simulated static, lateral and dynamic loading. Geo-Wall groups are judged on multiple areas — a paper of their findings and research on how to build the box is submitted; then students present at conferences and other Universities. Finally, the Geo-Wall team builds their box and adds sand in the middle to see if it will hold.
