ASCE - Steel Bridge (2017)
The Steel Bridge team is one of many American Society of Civil Engineering project teams. Steel Bridge is a group of students that engineer, design, fabricate, and build a bridge during a competition. We order all the materials from steel and metal manufacturers. The process of building to design specifications begins after the steel is received. The competition consists of cutting the steel down to length and welding connections to each member. The creation of the connection pieces must use the mill and lathe in the machine shop. There is extensive time put into this project but is completed by students with no professional help in the making of the bridge.
This competition challenges students to build their own designed and fabricated steel bridges. Students design and fabricate throughout the semester and then take the bridge to competition, where bridges are ranked according to construction cost, construction speed, total bridge weight, bridge stiffness, and more. Please make a gift so we can purchase materials to compete.
