UD Alternative Break (UDaB)

The University of Delaware Alternative Break (UDaB) organization immerses student-led teams in direct service and experiential learning with community organizations to increase knowledge of social justice issues and encourage life-long active citizenship. UDaB programs consist of a weeklong experience to work with a community over winter or spring break. Each program has a focus area that can range from environmental to domestic violence, disabilities to disaster relief and much more. Each trip involves significant education of such focus area(s) before, during, and after the alternative break. UDaB focuses on promoting social justice by providing opportunities for students to engage in mutually beneficial service with a vision to develop a community of active citizens. UDaB began in 2010 and piloted its first program during the 2011 Spring Break. In that first year, 92 student participants and 12 student leaders traveled to five communities to pursue service projects. Going on 8 years later, we've seen tremendous growth in 2017, with 593 student participants and 66 student leaders traveling to 31 communities over winter and spring break, contributing almost 20,000 hours of service and learning an immeasurable amount from those they served.

Raising money to increase our award fund will help us to fulfill our vision of involving more UD students in UDaB and cultivating a community of active citizens on campus. With our exponential growth, we struggle to have enough financial support to keep our programs affordable for students. We are asking our family, friends and alumni to help us raise money to increase our award fund that will help us fulfill our vision of involving more UD students in UDaB and cultivating a community of active citizens on campus. By providing more substantial financial awards, students will get the chance to have a transformative experience through UDaB that would have otherwise been prevented due to cost.

We are grateful that so many students on campus want to dedicate their time over winter and spring breaks to serve communities outside their own, and we need your help to make this opportunity more affordable.

UDaB is an organization that gives back more than what is put into it. It makes the lives of participants in leadership better and improves the UD community. Over the past 8 years, UDaB, has instilled the values of service, community, and social justice in thousands of young people. As they graduate from the university, they take those values with them and help to develop better communities all over the world. This unique experience will only be possible in a student's short time at UD, so please consider helping make this a reality for many who struggle to afford it.
