Help the UD Symphony Orchestra go to China
In May, the UD Symphony Orchestra (UDSO) embarks on a 12-day tour of China, collaborating with musicians from East China Normal University and Xi-An Conservatory to perform works by American and Chinese composers.
The concert program includes a world premiere by Mark Hagerty, "Beyond these Horizons," which
will feature 6-Wire violin and erhu duo, Xiang Gao and Cathy Yang, with Israeli percussionist Chen Zimbalista.
The amazing opportunities in the original tour schedule are funded by the Department of Music, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Provosts Office, the Institute for Global Studies, the Master Players Concert Series, student contributions and private donors. UDSO is thrilled to be invited to perform in the state-of-the-art Shanghai Oriental Art Center (SHOAC), one of the premiere performance venues in Asia and a once-in-a-lifetime event for our emerging student artists. This performance extends the original tour dates and the UDSO is looking for community support for the concert appearance.
The 80-member University of Delaware Symphony Orchestra (UDSO), under the direction of James Allen Anderson, is one of UD's acclaimed student ensembles. Last season, UDSO and Dr. Anderson were finalists in the American Prize for Orchestral Performance and Orchestra Conducting, and they were awarded first place in the American Prize in Orchestral Programming, the Maestro Vytautas Marijosius Memorial Award.
Recent performances have included masterpieces such as Shostakovich's Symphony No. 6 and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem, as well as works from contemporary composers such as Jennifer Higdon, Robert Moran, and Joseph Vella.
